Step 4: Verify the GM angle on the margin of the
map with the declination diagram formed on the face
of the compass. Remember, with declination diagrams
on the compass pointing to the left of the black index
line, you must subtract the GM angle from 360°.
Step 3: Rotate the map and compass until the directions of the declination diagram
formed by the black index line and the compass needle match the directions shown
on the declination diagram printed on the margin of the map.
Step 2: With the compass aligned to a north-south grid line, a declination diagram
is formed with the black index line on the compass face pointing at grid north
and the magnetic arrow of the compass pointing at magnetic north.
Step 1: Place the compass on the map with the edge of the compass parallel to
a north-south grid line.
